...damn it. The instant the words were out of her mouth, Katherine knew she was going to regret it. Especially since she knew that her father spent a great deal of time talking to the two people who would know her health better than most...the school matron and her Medicinal Magic Professor, who happened to be a former Healer. It was why she was always so careful when she was dealing with them. Because they were quite literally trained to spot the subtle differences in a person’s attitude, body weight or colouring. And she just didn’t have the time to deal with people poking and prodding at her. ”I’m not feeling great, but I’m not dead yet,” Katherine retorted with a soft roll of her eyes. ”I figure that the Bludgers haven’t taken me out yet.”Her eyes quickly moved as she began to fiddle with the glove on her hand, a means of avoiding her father’s gaze. Things were better than they had once been. During his drunken episodes they wouldn’t have been able to carry on a conversation like this at all, even if it was strained and awkward. He simply would have gotten frustrated and yelled at her to go do whatever she wanted...to stop pestering him with questions. He wasn’t able to handle the questions at that point. Almost like he couldn’t handle the voices at all. As she pulled the glove a little higher on her wrist, she moved to do the same with the other and resecured the velcro strap around her wrist. They had been his Christmas gift to her a few years back, and the gloves had spared her hands from a lot of cuts and bruises from catching Quaffles in the middle of matches. But the signs of wear were beginning to show, and Katherine quietly prayed that they would get her through one more season before she had to retire them. Somehow it just wouldn’t feel right if she had to try and break in a new pair before she graduated. When at last her eyes did look back up toward her father, Kate cleared her throat, running fingers back through her hair and above her ear. ”Are you sure you’re okay? You look like you’ve got something on your mind…” A look she had seen quite a number of times since he had become sober and started working at the school. And it only seemed to appear when he was around her. It never seemed to appear when he was talking to another student or even a professor. Only her...and only when there was no one else around. Sighing softly, Kate moved her broom off to the one side, holding firmly to the handle as her dark brown eyes focused on the lines in his face that were beginning to denote his age. He seemed older now. Far more weary than ever before. ”Dad...what is it?”WORD COUNT: 503 TAGGED: MARCUS LENNOXNOTES: --

As class finally came to an end and the students began to collect their things, Katherine could make out the voice of her professor reminding them of the homework that was due for next week. A whole roll of parchment about the properties of unicorn horn in potion making and its external uses. In addition to all of the other homework that had been added to their piles since the start of term, Kate was sure that she would have lost track of herself. Thank goodness she always took copious notes and left herself a list up in her dorm room so that she wasn’t at risk of forgetting anything. Being in her final year meant that the professors would not be all that forgiving if she were to say she had forgotten about a homework assignment. She glanced at the clock, noting the time of day. Kate had a spare period before the lunch hour was due to begin, and usually she would head back to her dorm in order to work on the assignment that sat at the top of her list. But she already knew what the assignment was, and she knew that she had a question about it before she could continue any further. Going to see Professor Dendron was always a risk. Her class took place in a small chamber just off of the hospital wing, which was always cozy due to the small class size that seemed to take Medicinal Magic. It was a risk because Professor Dendron was a former Healer...someone who made a career out of looking at people and knowing when something was amiss. But perhaps if she was able to keep her on topic and press the issue of her assignment, Kate would be able to get out of there without having been asked too many questions. Though whether it was truly Professor Dendron or her father who was asking, she didn’t know. There had been a few instances now where Kate had noticed that the two of them were spending a lot of time together. She tried to put the thought aside, reminding herself that they were both members of the faculty. Of course they were going to see one another in the teacher’s lounge and such. And knowing her father, he wouldn’t hesitate to ask his fellow professor how his daughter was doing in her class. There was something in his smile that had seemed different though. Something Katherine couldn’t quite put her finger on. The brunette gave her head a small shake, exhaling sharply as she stood outside the doors of the hospital wing. She didn’t really have any time to be worrying about something that likely didn’t even exist. She needed to talk to Professor Dendron about the assignment and then she needed to head back up to Gryffindor Tower so that she could work on the bloody thing… Knocking softly, Kate pushed the door aside and poked her head around the corner. ”Professor Dendron?”WORD COUNT: 507 TAGGED: LENNA DENDRONNOTES: --

Kate didn’t entirely mind the idea of having to share the book. It wasn’t as if she were going to take it out of the library and never return it. Not only would the librarian take offense to that, but Kate had too much of a conscious to knowingly keep something that didn’t belong to her. No matter how valuable the information in the book was, she had no business trying to keep the knowledge to herself. ”Well, I-...”She had to go down to the Great Hall for dinner. If she didn’t make an appearance, people would notice and come to find her later. Between her father and her boyfriend she didn’t know which of them would be the worst to deal with. Probably her father...because nobody wanted a professor to corner them in the halls and demand to know why they were absent from something. It would be embarrassing to the worst degree. Sighing softly, Kate’s shoulders fell a bit. The suggestion of returning after dinner seemed to be her best option right now if she was to get her hands on the information she needed. ”I suppose.” But as soon as the student asked about being untrustworthy because of their house? Kate took a step back and took the book with her, frowning darkly. ”Grow the hell up,” she hissed at them. ”If you still subscribe to that stupidity then this conversation is over. I don’t care where the hell you were sorted. I don’t care if you’re a bloody werewolf. But I do care if you’re going to be an ass about it…”It was archaic! The very idea that people could still hold grudges against one another for no other reason than the fact that they had been sorted into a different house was perhaps the stupidest thing that Katherine Lennox had ever heard of in her life. This wasn’t wartime anymore. They were beyond that, and she had hoped that most of her generation were intelligent enough to be able to put that nonsense behind them rather than carry it forward. Apparently not everyone had gotten the memo. Huffing quietly, she threw the book back on top of their stack. ”Fine. Keep it. Whatever. I’ll look for it later.” Then she moved around them, pulling her bag higher up onto her shoulder as she headed for the door and stewed in her irritation. The nerve of some people! Her boyfriend was a bloody Ravenclaw for Merlin's sake! "And for the record, my father is Professor Lennox. He was a Slytherin when he was in school too," she shot back over her shoulder. Things between herself and her father were certainly better than they had once been. But Katherine found that she didn’t really know how to act around him anymore, especially now that he was a professor attending the very same school that she was. Her hands held tightly to the handle of her broomstick. Was a hug appropriate in this moment? Would it be frowned upon for him to have that kind of contact with a student, even if she was his daughter? Did...did Kate even want to be hugged? No...because her father noticed things… Katherine reached up, nervously tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. ”I doubt that I’m going too far, Dad. London isn’t exactly far. And that’s only if I get accepted to the Healer program, you know that.” The program was intense though. Most of the people who had applied within the last five years had been rejected because they hadn’t had the grades to qualify or been able to get through the initial training stages. Most of them either changed careers entirely or resorted to working in their local apothecary, working on potions of an easier and more common nature. And she wanted to working with the creature induced injuries department. That was her goal. Ever since she moment she had met her boyfriend, she had been fascinated with the idea that a body could exist halfway between the human and magical worlds. That it could be affected by situations in both and almost never properly feel comfortable with the elements. He was half-vampire...but there were so many other creatures that could be utilized for healing properties, even if the creature itself was known for their more violent tendencies! Feeling her cheeks flush, Kate quickly looked down at the ground and shuffled her feet. ”Anyway...the rest of the team isn’t practicing today. Ravenclaw has the pitch later tonight. I just...needed to do something with my time. That’s all.”But it was bloody hard to be your own training partner and throw around a Quaffle. Even if she had someone else with her, they would be entirely dependent on one another to try and get something done. Her father didn’t feel comfortable on a broom though, which made training a little harder. ”I wasn’t feeling great. I thought this might help.”WORD COUNT: 401 TAGGED: MARCUS LENNOXNOTES: --

The idea wasn’t really to put in the extra training outside of what the team already demanded. It had all started because Katherine had found herself unable to sleep. The nightmares that she had begun to experience over the summer hadn’t yet released their hold on her, and the voices continued to taunt her when her eyes were closed. But there were too many other people in the same room as her now. Someone was sure to be woken by her shouts and want to know what the trouble was, even if Kate wasn’t able to explain it. The images were always garbled, as if they were caught in the ripples of the water and waiting for it to still before they could truly be visible. But the voices were unmistakable. There were a few that sounded like people she knew...a few that taunted her with all of the harsh words and thoughts that she experienced in her waking hours. The voice that called the most....the one that beckoned her forward...to join her… Gripping her broomstick firmly in her hands, Katherine closed her eyes tightly and shook her head before she kicked off from the ground as hard as she could. No! She wasn’t going to listen. She couldn’t! She blinked to try and rid her eyes of the forming tears as she leaned over the handle of her broom, taking off for the opposite side of the pitch at top speed. It didn’t matter how many times she had heard that voice before, it never seemed to get any easier when she realized that it was all in her head. She would never turn around to see that woman waiting for her again. More than seven years had passed since Kate had last been able to do that. Since she had felt her mother hug her tightly and whisper that she loved her daughter. Had she known what was going to happen...was there something that Kate could have done to stop her? She’d only been nine years old. It had all happened just shy of her tenth birthday, the very reason that Katherine could no longer bear to mark the day at all. It always made her feel sick to her stomach when she thought about it. Yanking her broom to the left, Katherine zoomed around the outer perimeter of the pitch with reckless speed, almost uncaring if she were to crash head first into one of the many pillars around the edge. There was no one out there to see her. If she were to hit at the right angle, either the impact or the fall would-... She slowed as she heard someone calling out to her, mentally cursing. Of all people to find her today… Forcing herself to take a breath, Kate slowed down and turned her broom into the pitch itself. Her father didn’t need to know. He didn’t need to see anything more than the small smile that she forced onto her lips as her feet touched the ground once more. ”Shouldn’t you be preparing for class, Professor?” she asked him, teasing weakly with the use of his formal title. ”The Headmistress won’t thank you for slacking so early into the school year. You have to be able to keep up with your students.” He as the Auror Studies Professor after all. The last thing he would want is to be beaten out by a bunch of kids who were less than half his age, though Kate knew those days were not too far ahead of him now. Kate nodded, looking from the book back to the student once more. ”The Potions professor suggested that we take a look. Or, well-....suggested that I go and look for it. The potions in here tend to be useful when dealing with magical creatures and their afflictions or wounds, so-...”It was the perfect book for Kate, at least for the moment. It was the very field that she had been looking at going into for a short while now. Her boyfriend was half-vampire, after all. And ever since her first year, when their relationship had been minimal and friendly, she had had an interest in the physiological differences between himself and a full vampire, or even a human. He was stuck between two worlds after all. On the one hand, she knew that he wasn’t going to burst into flames the instant the sun touched his skin, but she knew that he would be uncomfortable and develop a nasty sunburn if it wasn’t tended to right away. And vampirism was only the surface of it! There were plenty of other magical creatures out there aside from vampires and werewolves and giants, after all! She would need to read about Grindylows and the effects of their bites on humans. Basilisks and unicorns and the various properties that were not usually spoken about in her classes. Pixies and gnomes and bowtruckles and all sorts of other creatures existed within the wizarding world...and Kate would need to know all that she could if she was to succeed this year. ”I graduate this year,” she added, wondering if perhaps it might stop that suspicious look she seemed to be getting from the younger Slytherin student as they eyed the book still in her hand. ”I intend to be a Healer when I leave. So this is...sort of essential to the rest of my studies.”If that wasn’t going to be the deciding factor, she was prepared to argue about the stack of books that they currently had in their arms. Surely they wouldn’t miss this one for a day or two while she read it and made her notes? If it was such a big deal she could speak to the librarian and make sure that the book ended up being put on hold for them once she had returned it. Sometimes that was the only way Kate managed to find the books she was looking for at all with so many students wandering the halls of Hogwarts. WORD COUNT: 421 TAGGED: @minjun NOTES: --

It was early enough in the year that Katherine had foolishly believed her chances at finding the book without difficulty would be rather good. Most students were trying to get themselves situated once more, readjusting their bodies to the new school term and their change in schedule. She didn’t think there was a single person in the school who was able to sleep past seven o’clock on the morning without the risk of missing breakfast or being late to their first class. And though most classes were finished in time for dinner, anyone taking Astronomy would have to wait until midnight before they headed up to the correct tower for their lesson. Frowning a little, Kate turned as if to round the corner and continue his search when she nearly collided with a stack of books….and the person who was practically hidden behind them. She stepped back in an effort to avoid hitting them, but not before two of the books on top of their stack slipped from the pile and landed directly on her foot with a dull thud. Kate gasped in pain, immediately drawing her foot back and up to hold it in her hand. Thank goodness for the sturdy shelf beside her, otherwise she would have fallen over from a lack of balance. But damn did it hurt! Gritting her teeth a little, the Gryffindor student rubbed at her toes. ”It’s okay…” she mumbled quickly at the other student. It wasn’t like they had done it on purpose, after all. Neither one of them had seen the other one coming around the corner. Though she honestly didn’t know how this other student could see anything with so many books in their arms. Once the pain had dulled a little, Kate knelt down to pick up the two books that had been the source of her discomfort. One of them was a paperback, the one that had managed only to catch the corner of her shoe and therefore startle her more than anything. But the other was a hardcover book...the very book that she had been looking for on the shelves. ...bloody hell!As Kate rose to her feet once more, she placed the paperback on the top of the pile of books, but held onto the other one for a moment. Even as she shifted her weight, she found that it was near impossible to try and make eye contact with the other person. Was the stack really that high, or were they hiding from her on purpose? ”Were-....were you reading this?” she asked as she held the offending book up a little higher for them to see. ”I was sort of looking for it earlier. I just got out of Potions class and it was recommended for what we were working on. It’s-...well, it’s pretty advanced potion making.” And if she was looking at this person correctly, she didn't think they were possibly any older than fourth or fifth year. Far too young to be worrying about this kind of magic already! WORD COUNT: 517 TAGGED: @minjun NOTES: --

The other students were likely back in their dorms, getting rid of their workloads for the day so that they could freshen up for dinner. After another grueling lesson in Potions, her seventh year classmates were already lamenting the fact that it was only the second week of classes and their homework pile was dangerously high. Some were trying to figure out how they were supposed to balance school work and Quidditch this year. Others were completely lost with what they even wanted to do with their lives once their final year was over. Some, however, just wanted a few moments alone before rejoining the chaos of the castle. Her bag was still heavy with her things from class, but as Katherine climbed the stairs, she detoured away from the rest of the Gryffindor students who continued to ascend to the tower. Instead she stopped off at the second floor, weaving slightly through the corridors so that she could find the entrance to the library. She needed another book to give her some insight into the potion they had been working on in class today. The professor had mentioned that it ought to be on the shelves of the library, and provided that no one else had already borrowed it. It was a potion that was often used for healing, and that was the career path that Katherine was seriously considering at this point. She shifted the bag on her shoulder, cringing slightly at the ache that was developing in her shoulder. It was just a little heavier than it should have been, but she supposed the added potion ingredients from today were not helping matters. She never knew what to bring to Potions these days, and often overcompensated by bringing just about every vial and ingredient that she had purchased over the summer to resupply. If she found the book that she was looking for there might still be time to take her things back up to Gryffindor Tower before dinner. If not, she’d end up lugging the foolish thing with her into the Great Hall and wedging it between herself and whoever ended up sitting beside her at the table. It would make for brilliant conversation, she was sure. Kate stepped into the back of the library, her eyes scanning the outside to make sure that she was headed in the right direction. The aisle was certainly correct. Now all she had to do was remember the author so that she could locate the proper spine. So her dark eyes lifted to look at the rows of books, steps slowing considerably so that she didn’t run the risk of missing it entirely. Where on earth was it? It had to be here somewhere. Her stomach sunk a little as she thought about it being in someone else’s hands. Biting down on her lower lip, she paused and scanned the shelf before her once more. Damn it….was it already gone? Had someone beaten her to finding it? She supposed there was really only one way for her to find out. Biting back her groan, Kate emerged from within the shelves once more and started looking about her for any sign of the librarian. There was still a little bit of time before dinner was due to begin. Perhaps she would get lucky and manage to catch them before they left. WORD COUNT: 565 TAGGED: OPEN NOTES: --

As someone cleared their throat behind her, Katherine felt Athena pull away and lower herself into an offensive position on her lap. The bird moved back and forth between her feet, wings opening slightly in preparation for flight. But as the brunette looked over her shoulder to see who it was that had joined them at such an early hour, she immediately set a hand against Athena’s back. ”It’s okay,” she cooed softly as she stroked her feathers from head to tail, using her other arm to pull the protective bird a little closer to her chest. ”Relax Athena, it’s okay.”Kate lifted her head, offering Callum a small smile. ”Sorry...she tends to get a little overprotective sometimes. Dad has a cat who likes to try and play with her tail feathers when she has her back turned.”She knew Callum to be an intelligent young man from Hufflepuff, someone she had written to a few times over the course of the summer months. They kept in touch on a casual basis, rarely seeking one another out or writing to expose secrets...but their friendship was one that worked really well for them. Casual conversation about school work and Quidditch had been their normal for a number of years now. They had actually played against one another for a few years, but Callum had ultimately decided that he didn’t like the constant pressure that was being put on him about the sport and had decided to retire. Kate had always thought it was a bit of a shame, given his natural talent in the sport, but she understood. His family was nothing by professional Quidditch players from what she could tell. The pressure was probably making it more of a chore to play than anything else. ”She’s a peregrine falcon,” Katherine explained, moving her arm once she was sure that Athena wasn’t going to attack him, though that didn’t seem to stop the bird from eyeing him warily. ”I found her in the woods behind my house a few years ago. Someone had actually shot her down and left her to die.”But Kate hadn’t been able to just leave her. It had been a trying and extremely painful process to get her back to the house before a wild coyote or even a cat had gotten to her, but Katherine had managed it. She had a few scars on her arm to prove that she had battled with the stubborn falcon as she tried to help her. At one point she thought Athena was going to take one of her fingers clean off while she tried to change the bandages on her wing. Eventually though, the two of them had come to a silent understanding. Kate wouldn’t touch her more than necessary, and the falcon would begrudgingly accept her help. Katherine smiled softly, stroking Athena’s feathered head once more. ”It took almost the entire summer to make you better, didn’t it?” she asked the bird. ”And when you were finally ready to fly again...you came right back.” Stubborn creature, she thought to herself. But the brunette lifted her head, bringing her attention back to Callum. "You survived the summer back home then?"[/colour] she asked him lightly. WORD COUNT: 550 TAGGED: CALLUM ECKHARTNOTES: --

OLDEST BROTHER Twenty -- Open House -- Open Career Taken by @silva
Things in the Lennox household have been stressed for a very, very long time. Since the sudden passing of their mother when Katherine was almost ten (making this guy about thirteen), their lives have been turned upside down in an unpleasant way. Their father became an alcoholic as a means of coping with his grief, and while her brothers were able to escape to school during most of the year, Kate wasn't so lucky. They were briefly in the custody of an aunt while their father attended rehab, but this brother likely saw everything that happened while their father was Katherine's primary caregiver...and I see him as being furious with their father for it. There was an incident in which Kate went to go ask Marcus something and he screamed at her in his drunken stupor. Afraid and hurt by the outburst, Kate disappeared into the forest behind the family home and didn't return. While she wasn't hurt, it took several hours after dark had fallen for Marcus to realize that she was missing and go looking for her. This incident would have been recounted to her older brother, though he was too young to have done anything much at the time. I'd like for him and Kate to be close. He can approve or disapprove of her boyfriend depending on how you take their relationship to be, but I think there is still an estrangement from Marcus that her brother isn't looking to remedy yet. There are bound to be a lot of hard feelings, all of which may come to a head when he realizes just how badly his sister's mental health is. Face and name are open! SECOND BROTHER Nineteen -- Open House -- Open Career Much like the older brother above, this brother likely has some issues with their father, but it's entirely up to you as to whether or not he seeks to mend their broken bond or not. All of the same issues will come into play when it comes to Kate and her mental health. I like the idea that they could be close, but I'm open to other ideas as well. Face and name are open!

KATHERINE LENNOX && CALLUM ECKHARTI like the idea that there was a friendship through the sport without the nasty rivalry. She might have been a little unsure of his compliments at first, but she would have eventually realized that Callum wasn't saying anything to try and get into her head. He genuinely meant the compliment. I can't say that she presently follows any particular teams. Maybe the Holyhead Harpies since they are an all female team and she thinks that it's incredible for them to be competing in a league of male-only and mixed teams. But they would make adorable study partners for medicinal magic. It's yet unclear if she will be able to actually pursue that path this time around or if she is going to fall on her face and need to find a new reality. The idea that they can be friends and be supportive without always needing to talk about what's happening would probably be good for her though. She can probably sense that Callum knows things are off, but she would appreciate the fact that he isn't putting his nose into her business or trying to make things better without knowing the extent of it. So if they talked about other things...Quidditch, homework, etc...I think they would be okay enough around one another to fit into "friends" very well. ...sadly, I think spending time with Athena is the best that she feels right now. It's quiet, non-judgmental and comforting.

It was cool enough that she knew she needed to wear a warmer cloak if she was going to venture up to the owlery at such an early hour of the morning. Only a week back at school and the weather had already taken a bit of a turn, leaving the grounds silvery with frost as the sun slowly began to rise each morning. Most were still tucked into their beds, the covers pulled tightly under their chins in order to keep warm for as long as possible. And since it was Saturday morning, even few of them were willing to rise at such an early hour and leave the comfort of their beds. But Katherine hadn’t been able to sleep the previous night. She had tossed and turned uncomfortably in her four poster bed, unable to get her mind to rest. It was too busy thinking about the classes she was going to have to worry about this term...and the assignments that were already beginning to pile up. Transfiguration required a roll of parchment by the end of next week. Potions would soon be testing her on the simplest of brews. And that didn’t even include the fact that she was going to need to start practicing with the team for the upcoming Quidditch season. In the early hours of the morning she had abandoned the idea of trying to sleep and slipped from the bed. She had brought her slippers with her, for which her toes were rather grateful, as she wrapped a cloak around her shoulders and left the dormitory behind. Within a few minutes (and after hearing mumbled complaints from the Fat Lady for being disturbed) Katherine had made her way out to the owlery tower. She settled in the window, knees pulled to her chest as she listened to the soft hooting of the owls around her. They didn’t seem too disturbed by her presence. Any of the ones who opened their bleary eyes to peer at her instantly knew that she wasn’t a threat and tucked their heads under their wings once more. Her only true companion was the falcon who rested on her knees, gently brushing her feathered head against Katherine’s cheek. Athena always seemed to know when she was having a bad time of things. The falcon had been in her care for nearly two years now, and despite their rocky start the bond they now shared was unlike any that Kate had ever experienced before. She didn’t speak the way humans did, but Athena understood. Her eyes told Kate that she did. ”Silly bird,” she murmured softly, lifting her chin as Athena stretched her neck and started to rub at her jawline. ”You’d think I never paid any attention to you.” The falcon seemed to hum in agreement, causing her mistress to laugh softly. Only a week back at the castle and her poor feathered friend was feeling neglected and alone. "I understand," Katherine told her sadly. WORD COUNT: 504 TAGGED: OPEN NOTES: --
